Black Kitchen Cabinets - Black the new in?

Welcome to www.blackkitchencabinets.org  the one place for all the latest buying advice & information on kitchen cabinets & accessories for your home kitchen.

Black is becoming more and more popular in the kitchen area for it's ease of implementation.  There was a time in design where silver and white tones were the defacto colour to have placed in your kitchen. Times have changed dramatically, and even more so in design. Black is the latest colour to take over the kitchen area, from black kitchen cabinets, black kitchen countertops and black flooring.

If you are considering purchasing some black kitchen cabinets to compliment your kitchen area you have made a wise choice. The colour black is a great foundation to style a contemporary influence in your kitchen.  It is important to note that this colour should be used in moderation with other light tones of colour such as silvers, cremes and whites to provide a dramatic kitchen that will not only please you but others who wonder into your kitchen. Wood cabinets such as maple, oak, pine and more can all be refinished to match your desired colour, although many find the natural tones and grains the woods have compliment black well.  Distressed black cabinets are one alternative to matt variations that add that little bit extra in visual appeal, providing other cabinetry, countertops and cabinet doors in your kitchen area compliment each other in the best way possible.

To compliment you black kitchen cabinets you could possibly have silver steel or a granite worktop with a silver/grey flooring .  This would provide balance in the styling of your kitchen. An Never match the flooring to black cabinets as this will create and illusion of the kitchen being small, as well as draw attention away from other focal points in the area.

Another colour to mix with your black kitchen cabinets is white.  If using white with a combination of black, please make sure your appliances remain as steel/silver tone.  Having white appliances with a black featured kitchen gives an impression of tackyness. On that note, use white maybe for the ceiling of the kitchen to compliment your black kitchen cabinets and have a litght tone tile surface for the flooring.  This type of mixture provides balance while still retaining the feeling of space.

When introducing the colour black to your kitchen whether it be via black cabinets or flooring etc, always be sure to have adequate lighting at hand.  Without bright lighting your black themed kitchen will look small and dull, and thats the last thing you want for your new styled kitchen.

Some of the most stylish black kitchen cabinets on the market are those styled on italian design.  Cabinet makes such as Decora and Cardell have a range of cabinets that come in natural tones as expected with wood types as well as a range of cupboards, countertops and kitchen sets primarily focused on giving that modern, italian look.

Converting your existing cabinets to black - Preparation

If you find cash is limited and are looking for cabinets in black styling for your kitchen then you could always convert your exisiting cabinets and give it your own splash of colour.  Below I have outlined the process of creating your own black cabinets with the use of some simple diy.

First things first!

  • If you have decided to paint your own kitchen cabinets then you will need to remove all the kitchen cabinet doors that are fixed. Clean all the surfaces of your cabinets inside and out.  I advice using a mixture of ammonia and water to remove stubborn grease and stains that may have built over time.
  • Insure all holes and cracks are filled.  You can use wood filler or some other kind of filler to do this.  This ensures a smooth finish once you have completed painting your cabinets black.  If you are planning to carry out the procedure in your kitchen make sure you have used tape and paint sheets to protect your kitchen area from unecessary paint splash.

Time to paint

  • First thing to do is to prime all surfaces of your kitchen cabinets with an adequate primer.  A brush will be fine for this process, although a roller might be more convienient for a quick and even process.  By applying primer to the surface of your cabinets you insure a supreme coat that sticks and is long lasting.  Remember to allow the surfce to dry after doing so before moving on with the rest of my steps.
  • Once cabinets have dried up then it's time to get your very own black ktichen cabinets!  I suggest purchasing a variation of black latex paint to apply to your cabinets.  By using this type of paint you insure your cabinets are easy to clean.  For a less glossy look you could apply a satin based paint, which will suffice, but remember all other types of paint are not adviced due to being difficult to clean and vulnerable to staining using commerical cleaning products.
  • Choose an interior semi-gloss or high-gloss black latex paint for your cabinets. This will give your cabinets a nice sheen and also make it easier to clean if they are splashed with food or grease. If you want less of a sheen, use satin, but stay away from eggshell or flat paint in a kitchen as they are difficult to clean, and many cleaners you use on them will result in a stain.
  • There is no real recommended amount of coats you should apply, it's totally up to you.  I recommend at least 2 coats of paint for the best finish possible.  At this stage it is important to keep cabinet doors open if you have left doors attached as sticking may occur during the drying process.

Once you have followed all the steps outlined and left your cabinets to dry you now have your very own modern black kitchen cabinets!  Carefully remount your cabinets units and admire how much of a difference colour can make to your kitchen.
