Refinishing wood kitchen cabinets

If you want to bring your old wood cabinets up to scratch and have them looking like new again, then you will need to consider refinishing them in order to do so.

Although the task itself is easy to accomplish on your own it must be noted that it is time consuming if you intend on doing it properly.  Before you decide on refinishing youre wood cabinets there are a few things you need to take into consideration, these are as follows:

Do you have the necessary time available?

As mentioned previously it takes quite a bit of time to refinish your cabinets if you want them done properly.  If you are in a rush to get them done then I recommend waiting until you do have the time available considering there maybe many coats of paint to be applied.  By taking your time and following the steps necessary you will insure you have carried out the best job possible.

Have everything planned beforehand!

Preparation is key to insuring you refinish your wood cabinets effectively.  Before starting any work make sure you have all the necessary tools available to avoid headache later on in the process.  One of the first things you shoudl do is prepare the cabinets themselves by removing all items inside and out and placing them in a storage area untill the work is completed.  If working in the kitchen area then I recommend getting some dust cloths to go on the floor to prevent flooring and surrounding area from paint & varnish splashes.

Insure your wood cabinet doors are removed!

Your wood cabinet doors should be removed before commencing refinishing.  I suggest placing them in a safe and secure space out of the kitchen so they don't get in your way.

Test your paint beforehand!

Whether you are using paint, varnish or glaze it's important to test it before applying it to your cabinets.  I suggest testing solutions on the inside of your cabinet doors in an area that will not be seen if it turns out you have the wrong paint, glaze or varnish.

Follow the steps exactly as they are listed!

There are many free guides on how to refinish your cabinets all on your own.  Please insure you are aware of drying times as well as application process for the paints, glazes and varnishes you have purchased.  By applying a coat when the previous coat is still wet is a sure fire way to get a result that won't be up to par.
